Description:
The Roosevelt Elk, in the Pacific Northwest, have a larger body than their Rocky Mountain counterpart. Although in the deer family female elk are called cows, males are bulls and babies are calves. Elk calves have spots like deer. Additional coloring is just like their parents with a darker head and neck and a white rump. Calves don't have a scent so predators cannot easily find them when Mom leaves to graze. It is common for one cow to stay behind with the "nursery herd".
